Abstract

Alcohols, especially those produced by catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide, are purified by a preliminary distillation with caustic alkali or a mixture of caustic alkali and brine, followed by the addition of small quantities of a primary amine of boiling-point above the temperature of distillation of the alcohol mixture, e.g. aniline or its homologues or derivatives of aniline containing negative substituents in the nucleus such as sulphanilic acid, and phosphoric or sulphuric acid to the distillate, and subsequent refractionation. The two operations may be carried out consecutively and continuously by passing the hot vapours from the alkali scrubbing column into the boiling, alkali scrubbed alcohol containing the required amine and acid in a still fitted with a rectifying column. Examples are given of the purification of the crude methanol and butanol fractions of the product of the catalyzed reaction between carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
