Abstract
542,410. Alloys; carbides. ALLOYS, Ltd. Jan. 29, 1940, No. 1763 and 1764. Convention dates, Feb. 14, 1939 and Jan. 9, 1940. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group III] A method of forming an alloy or carbide in powdered form comprises heating a mixture of a powdered metal hydride such as calcium, strontium. or barium hydride, an oxide of a refractory metal, and iron, nickel, cobalt, carbon, or another refractory metal, so as to effect the reduction of the oxide by the liberated hydrogen, whereafter the temperature is raised to cause the reduced metal particles to combine with the other particles present to form particles of the desired alloy or carbide separated by a material such as calcium oxide which may afterwards be removed by leaching or other means. The refractory metals may be titanium, zirconium, hafnium, thorium, tantalum, uranium, molybdenum, beryllium, tungsten, and chromium.
