Abstract
504,522. Alloys. PETERSSON, H. July 6, 1938, No. 19991. [Class 82 (i)] A hard alloy, particularly for tools and dies, consists of 60-80 per cent of tungsten carbide, 0À01-1 per cent of cobalt, 0À5-5 per cent of boron, 0À5-5 per cent of silicon, and either 15-35 per cent of tungsten, or 7-23 per cent of molybdenum, or 2À5-16 per cent of tungsten and 2À5-15 per cent of molybdenum. Part of the tungsten carbide may be replaced by 8-10 per cent of tantalum carbide or 3-4 per cent of niobium carbide or both. The alloy is made by subjecting a mixture of the powders to a pressure of about 2400 lb. per sq. in. at 1750- 1900‹ C. Up to 2 per cent of thorium oxide may be added to prevent rapid crystal growth during heating.
