Abstract

539,772. Motor vehicle driving gear. DAIMLER CO., Ltd., and SIMPSON, C. M. Aug. 27, 1940, No. 13538. [Class 79 (ii)] Each driving road-wheel 4 is driven from a driving shaft 5 through epicyclic reducing gear comprising a sun pinion 9 on the driving shaft, planet pinions 10 on a spider 11 fixed to the wheel 4, and a stationery annulus 14 fixed to a hollow stub axle 1 which encloses the driving shaft and has external bearings 3 for the wheel. The wheel may be a steering wheel and7or may be independently sprung, in either of which cases it is driven through a universal joint 7. The planet wheel spindles 16 pass through the spider 11 and nuts 20 on their outer ends secure a cover 19 in place; when these nuts and the cover are removed a nut 25 on the end of the shaft 5 can be removed after which a bearing 24 can also be removed to expose the gearing which can then be readily inspected or removed.
