Abstract

517,105. Motor-vehicle driving gear. THOMSON, J. Sept. 1, 1938, No. 25562. [Class 79 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A variable - speed epicyclic gearing, particularly adapted for steering endless track vehicles, comprises driving and driven shafts 5, 6, Fig. 1, and a freelyrotatable carrier 7, common to both shafts and carrying two sets of,planet wheels, 12, 13 respectively meshing with sun wheels 8, 9 on the said shafts and with outer internally - toothed rings 10, 11 being provided with crown teeth which mesh with a common pinion 14 on a rotatable hand &c. control rod 15. The arrangement is such that the rings 10, 11 are normally stationary, but rotation of the pinion 14 in either direction will effect a rotation of the rings in opposite directions and a variation of the speed ratio of the shafts 5, 6. Fig. 3 shows the invention applied to a differential gearing between shafts 6, 17 constituting the driving axles of a road vehicle in which case the sun wheel 8 is made integral with the differential planet wheel carrier 18 which is formed as a crown for rotation by a driving pinion 19 and rotatably supports the outer ring 10, and the sun wheel 9 is mounted on the shaft 6, the adjacent ends of the shafts 6, 17 carrying bevel pinions 16, 22 meshing with the planet wheels 21 of the said carrier 18. In both of the above constructions, one of the rings 10, 11 may be permanently fixed and the other rotatable by manually or mechanically operable means.
