Abstract

539,309. Road vehicle bodies and spring suspensions. GUY, S. S. March 26, 1940, No. 5388. [Classes 108 (i), 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a motor vehicle having a rigid or armour-plate body which does away with the necessity for a frame, the engine or power unit, springs, clutch, brake and steering controls are connected or attached to the body. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the front of the engine is supported by a transverse member a secured by brackets b to the side walls c of the vehicle body, and the rear of the engine or engine and gear-box unit is supported by a member h secured by brackets i to the body. The members a, h may be rigidly secured to the brackets or may be pivoted thereto as shown atj. The member a may also carry a pivoted beam d, which may be a spring, the suspension springs (not shown) being connected to swivelling brackets e at the ends of the beam. Alternatively the front longitudinal suspension springs may be connected at their ends to brackets secured to the body. The side walls of the body may be strengthened by a cross member m, Fig. 4, connected thereto by brackets n, this member carrying the clutch and brake pedals o, p and the lower end of the steering column q. The brackets may be secured to the body, if the latter is of heat-treated steel, in the manner described in Specification 533,458, [Group XXII].
