Abstract
537,421. Plate heat exchangers. CHERRYBURRELL. CORPORATION. Nov. 20, 1939, Nos. 30431 and 30432. Convention, dates, Nov. 30, 1938 and Jan. 13, 1939. [Class 64 (iii)] A heat exchange unit intended particularly for use in a top-feed' trickle film type cooler consists of stamped plates 23, 24, Figs. 7, 10, welded together along lines 42, 43 and bulged outwards between the welds to -form a continuous passage 20 between the plates. The plates are stamped with staggered rows of outwardly directed, preferably semi-spherical protuberances 28. End plates 31, Fig. 14, are welded to outwardly turned flanges 30 and triangular webs 34 are secured between the end-plates and the flanges. Each element is supported by hinged inlet and outlet arms 35, 36, Fig. 1. Liquid to be cooled falls over a cylindrical stiffening element 22 welded to the top of the uppermost section. The surface of the element 22 and of the parts of the pla.tes between the horizontal passes of the flow passage, are grained finished. The plates are first welded together along their edges and weld lines 42, 43 and the parts between the weld lines are then bulged out by fluid pressure applied through the inlet and outlet passages 35, 36. The flow passage may be formed by placing spacing strips along the weld lines of the unit.
