Abstract

533,269. Making chains. WIGGIN, W., WIGGIN, N., WIGGIN, W. C. B., and WIGGIN, A. L. Oct. 26, 1939, No. 28722. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Angular bending, welding.-Small link chains, such as gun or dog chains, are made by overlapping the squared ends of the links and pressing them into line by the welding electrodes which electrically weld them together. The joint preferably occurs at one of the ends of the link. Wires coiled on a former slightly wider at one end of the section than at the other is first cut by a pair of shearing tools into links which are at the same time opened out to facilitate threading. After threading together the links are compressed laterally between a movable tool E and a fixed tool E<SP>1</SP> so as to bring the free ends closer together and to overlap them as shown in Fig. 8. The tools are shaped at e, e<SP>1</SP> to retain the links in position during pressing. Guides F act as stops prior to pressing but are clear of the links after pressing. The links are welded between electrodes G, G<SP>1</SP> each provided with part circular grooves g, g'.
