Abstract

Chains are made by cutting off lengths of rod in the cold state, heating both ends of each blank 1, upsetting the ends so as to compress them and at the same time form an enlargement at a distance from each end, for example by placing a cap 2, Fig. 1, over the end of the blank in the upsetting-press, then bending the blank so that the ends overlap, as shown in Fig. 6, with the enlarged part of each end bearing against the compressed part of the other end, and finally welding.
