[Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] An electromagnetic clutch for clutching an element, e.g. a gear wheel 20 to a shaft 11 comprises a coil 17 supported by a non- magnetic member 16 which is secured to a flange 12 on the shaft 11 and slidably and drivingly supports the inner peripheries of a set of clutch plates 14, a second set of clutch plates alternating with the first set being slidably and drivingly supported by a non-magnetic member 21 fixed to a second flange 18 on the shaft 11. One flange is integral with the shaft and the other loose upon it and fixed to the wheel &e. 20 to be driven. The member 16 may be secured to either the integral flange as shown or to the loose flange. Current is supplied to the coil by a brush 23 and slip ring 24 mounted on an insulating strip 25. Two clutches for driving toothed wheels of different sizes may be arranged one on each side of a common integral flange. By holding the loose flange stationary such a clutch may be used as a brake for the shaft 11. The clutch plates may be crimped about a diameter or about a number of equally-spaced radii. If the gear wheel 20 has helical teeth, these are arranged to provide an axial thrust upon the clutch plates. Specification 15640/05, [Class 103], is referred to.
