Abstract

532,869. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., TRENCHAM, H., and COX, H. E. June 27, 1939, No. 18737. [Class 38 (v)] When the movable contact-rod on tube 1 is withdrawn from the garter contact 2 in the nozzle-member 3, to the accompaniment of a blast admitted at 6 and exhausted at 7, the arc is drawn against a ring- contact 11 adjacent or engaging contact 1 and connected to contact 2 by a resistance 12, the subsequent arc between 1, 11 being in series with the resistance. The contact 11 is carried on an arc-splitter 10, fibre discs 8 and separating- members 9 completing the nozzle - structure. The inlet 6 may alternatively be located against a lower garter contact (not shown) or the latter may be outside cylinder 4 which may be closed below by means having a hole allowing the contact 1 to be completely withdrawn. In Fig. 4 (not shown) an insulation-covered tubular auxiliary electrode may extend from or through the wall 4 into engagement with contact 1, to form a second nozzle contact, and may carry a pivoted spring-contact for positively engaging contact 1. When a tubular contact 1 is employed, the blast therethrough is released by uncovering ports therein from a bottom closure-member of the switch-structure. Specification 463,411 is referred to.
