531,915. Road-surfacing machines. JOHNSTON. J. T. M. July 13, 1939, No. 20452. Addition to 422,842. [Class 107] An improvement in the machine claimed in the parent Specification comprises the use of an auxiliary transverse blade or blades on one or both sides for'levelling the road surface at that part or parts. traversed by the end of the reciprocating blade. An undercarriage 11 is carried by adjustable screw devices 15, 12 from a chassis 10 which may be turned or self-propelled, and carries a blade 18 supported and positioned thereon by means of rollers 21, 22, 23 engaging angle bars 19 secured to the upper edge of the blade which is reciprocated by crank and connecting rod 31, 32 driven through gearing and clutch mechanism as the chassis moves, as described in the parent Specification. The gearing for reciprocation in the present case is driven through a shaft 36 from an internal combustion engine 38 mounted on the undercarriage. Auxiliary blades 24 are adjustably mounted on each side of the undercarriage on shafts 28 carried by brackets and an extension 30 of each shaft is connected by a spring 40 to a bracket 41 so that the blades can give when obstructions are encountered by them on the kerb. The arms 30 normally rest against supports 42 and the rear of the undercarriage bears against pillars 43. Specifications 426,000 and 531,914 also are referred to.
