Abstract

527,204. De-aerating liquids. ARROWSMITH, G., and HICK, HARGREAVES, & CO. Ltd., April 4. 1939, No. 10455. [Class 1 (i)] Liquids, e.g. boiler feed water, are de-aerated by atomizing drops or fine streams of the liquid by means of a high-velocity steam jet. Apparatus for the process comprises a chamber into which the liquid is introduced, means for introducing steam, and means for removing liberated gases. The liquid may be sprayed upon a perforated tray or a vertical series of such trays, preferably annular trays. Steam jets, directed outwards may be provided, e.g. in pipes of ring or star form arranged in the central space, or the jets may be directed inwards. Reduced pressure may be maintained in the chamber, the steam pressure being atmospheric or greater. As shown, a chamber 1 is provided with a nozzle box 2 (which may be replaced by an injection pipe) the supply of water to which is controlled by the floatoperated valve 6. The spray falls into a tray 8 perforated at the outer part, and the drops passing through fall into an annular perforated tray 11. Steam is led through pipe 12 to nozzle distributors 14, 15. Liquid collecting at the bottom of the chamber is removed via pipe 4. A steam injector 16 withdraws air and maintains a vacuum within the chamber.
