Abstract

623,367. Retting flax &c. VERMEIREN, T. I. S. May 5, 1945, No. 11500. Convention date, March 10, 1941. [Class 120 (i)] In an aerobic method of retting flax &c., the retting water is purified by treatment with air in an enclosed space G maintained at a pressure greater than atmospheric and the treated water is then filtered at F. Used water from retting pits flows through a trough C and sieve L into settling tanks D, E. From the tank E the hard water is pumped by a pump H into a container G containing small tubes of porcelain. Air from a compressor K is led through an expansion chamber 2 and through a pipe 3 into the container G when the water and air under pressure are intimately mixed. The treated water now passes through a tube 5 into a filter F and, after passing through the filtering mass is collected at 6, heated by a steam injector 18 and then led through a pipe 8 to a feed tank B from where the retting pits are supplied. The volatile products are released from the filter F through the pipe 12. The filter is cleansed by connecting an air supply to pipe 9 and a clean water supply to pipe 18 and evacuating the rinsing water through the pipe 11 into the tank E. Manometers 13, 14 indicate the pressure difference between the top and bottom of the filter. A float 16 and switch 17 on the tank E may control automatically the pump H and compressor K.
