Abstract
527,170. Finishing &c. yarns &c. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI. April 1, 1939, No. 10267. Convention date, April 2, 1938. [Class 120 (iii)] [Also in Group IV] Artificial yarns, threads, cords, or the like are wetted with a liquid e.g. water, incapable of impairing the natural properties of the component fibres, and then stretched while wet under a constant load and for a sufficient length of time to obtain a permanent extension of the thread accompanied by elimination of substantially all differences of mechanical strength including stress-strain curve characteristics from point to point along its length. The stretched threads are dried under tension so as to hold them until dry at the degree of deformation to which they have been brought by the stretching operation. The threads may be of cellulose acetate, benzyl cellulose, or other cellulose derivative, or of regenerated cellulose from viscose or nitrocellulose. Continuous filament or staple fibre yams or threads may be used. The treated threads have a high resistance to breaking. The wetting liquid may be water or a solution or dispersion of a substance capable of imparting opacity, colour, adhesiveness, or impermeability to water. Threads to be treated subsequently with rubber may be stretched with the aid of a solution or dispersion of a protein or synthetic resin which improves the adhesive capacity of the threads for rubber. The stretching load may be 25-75 per cent of the breaking load and the period of application may be 1 minute or less. The period of immersion in the wetting liquid may be not greater than the period of application of the stretching load. After the thread has been dried it is preferable to wind it under a tension which is not greater than that which has been applied in the stretching operation. The treated threads may be used in the production of transmission belting, hose, and pneumatic tyre covers. They may be impregnated with natural or synthetic rubber.
