Abstract

693,629. Reeds for looms; yarns. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. April 25, 1951 [April 27, 1950], No. 10402/50. Classes 120(iii) and 142(iii) The yarn 14, spacing the wires 13 of a reed and securing them in position by being wound round the baulk members 12, between which the wires extend, has a content of thermoplastic textile fibres and of other and relatively non-thermoplastic textile fibres such that the wires, baulk members and the yarn can be fixed relatively to one another by the coalescence of the thermoplastic fibres in the yarn. In one arrangement the yarn comprises fibres of cellulose acetate, preferably in the form of continuous filaments, combined with fibres of regenerated cellulose, the cellulose acetate fibres being softened by dipping the baulks in acetone to fix the wires, baulks and yarn to one another. and then allowed to dry. To assist the coalescence of the parts the baulks may be painted with an acetonesoluble paint. The baulk members may be constructed with reinforcing members and may be of cellulose acetate plastic material which is superficially softened when they are immersed in acetone to ensure a firm bond between the yarn and themselves. Alternatively the baulk members may be hollow or may have a split tube 36 which secures the wires by sliding over the baulk members and the ends of the wire with the jaws of the tube gripping beneath the baulk members. Instead of using continuous filaments of regenerated cellulose as the relatively non-thermoplastic basis of the yarn, cotton or linen fibres may be used, or even artificial fibres, and preferably continuous filaments, of high melting synthetic linear polymers such as.polyamides, which can be associated with thermoplastic filaments that can be softened without softening the high melting filaments. The yarn used for binding the dents may be made up of eight ends 16 of continuous filament cellulose acetate yarn and eight ends 17 of high tenacity regenerated cellulose yarn, two of the ends 16 being doubled with two of the ends 17 to form each of four doubled yarns 18 and the four yarns 18 being further doubled together in the reverse direction to produce the yarn 14. The proportions of ends 16 and 17 may be varied if desired. In an alternative method of making up the yarn, it may have as its basis a low twist, yarn 21 of continuous high tenacity regenerated cellulose filaments, this yarn 21 being covered with four ends 22 of multifilament cellulose acetate yarn lapped in one direction at twelve to fifteen laps per inch to form a covered yarn 24. The yarn 24 is further covered with four ends 25 of cellulose acetate continuous filament yarn lapped in the opposite direction to the yarns 22 so as to form the double covered yarn 26.
