Abstract
522,086. Moulds. CHATWIN, J. (Thyssen Hutte Akt.-Ges., A.). April 3, 1939, No. 10326. [Class 83 (i)] Mould materials.-The rate of cooling of a casting in an ingot or a centrifugal metal mould is decreased by lining the mould, wholly or in part, with mould material having grains of varying size, sintered to increase its strength. The material should have 40 per cent. with grains between 4 and 2 mm. in diameter, the rest being under 0.85 mm. or 40 per cent. between 2 and 0.85 mm. and 20 per cent. under 0.85 mm. A mixture of materials having different thermal expansions may be used so that during drying and in use the lining does not expand or contract relative to the mould, e.g., 75 per cent. burnt chamotte, 13 per cent. fresh clay and 12 per cent. quart with a little water, dextrine, or sulphite liquor. Cohesion may be improved and cooling increased by embedding iron wires, rods, or rings in the lining, 3, e.g., integral or screwed rings 7, Fig. 3, or 9, Fig. 5. As the lining 3 at the ends of the mould 1 is subjected to the most wear it may be replaced by an integral shoulder 6, Fig. 2, or a screwed or loose iron ring 5 or a strongly burnt refractory ring.
