Abstract

278,032. Parsons, Sir C. A., and Duncan, H. M. April 29, 1926. Moulds; casting processes.-To ensure ingots cooling from the bottom upwards the sides d of the mould are of refractory material and the bottcm is a large chill m, the mould being highly preheated and the charge heated at the top after casting. The sides d and cover e of the mould are of firebrick blocks in steel casings a, f and they are heated by placing on a firebrick table provided with gas or oil burners, by burners j in the cover, or by heating flues or electric heating coils in the thickness of the sides. The inside is kept smooth by a wash of clay, graphite, carborundum or the like. The burners are used to keep the top of the ingot from cooling too quickly. The chill m is of iron or steel, in one or more pieces, and may be provided with gills &c. cooled by airblast. The mould is lifted off the solid ingot by means of eyes g and a crane. The chill m is protected by a renewable steel plate n. Specifications 22923/96, 142,201, and 226,270 are referred to.
