Abstract
828,076. Filters ; water purifying. HOVLID, N. G. May 28, 1956 [Nov. 29, 1955], No. 16470/56. Class 46. Apparatus for the purification, aeration and filtration of water in an aquarium comprises a support plate 10 vertically spaced from the base of the aquarium 13 to form a clean water collection chamber 9. The plate 10 supports glass wool and/or gravel 14 and 15 has a plurality of openings, the total area of which is preferably not less than 10% of the area of the plate. The openings are also of such a size and shape to restrain particles of the gravel from passing into the chamber 9. Circulation of the water is obtained by an air lift, in which air supplied by a pump 30, through pipes 29, 28, 27 at just above the pressure of the water lifts clean water from chamber 9 and 19, through pipe 26 to the upper part of the aquarium, at the same time the bubbles of air oxygenate the water . The aquarium sewage will be urged downwardly into the spaces between the gravel particles 15 and the aerobic bacteria existing in these spaces convert the sewage into non-tonic chemical compounds.
