Abstract

521,118. Balancing engine parts. BESCHKINE, L. Nov. 8, 1938, No. 32416. [Class 80 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVI] In mechanisms, including members moving non-uniformly, vibration is reduced by one or more inertia members driven by a rotating part at a speed which is cyclically variable relatively to the speed of the varying part. If the vibration is caused by torque variation it may be reduced by a flywheel mounted on a shaft which is driven from the engine shaft by gearing including non- circular gear wheels. The single flywheel may be replaced by two smaller flywheels. In an arrangement for balancing reciprocating masses whose centre of gravity GM varies, the engine shaft 10 drives a pair of spindles 11, 12 through non-circular gearing 6 ... 9. The spindles 11, 12 carry flywheels 13, 14, and have their centres of gravity G', G<2> displaced from the axes. The gearing 6...9 is designed so that the masses on the spindles 11, 12, in combination with the engine masses acting at GM produce a resulting mass acting at G fixed in space.
