836,957. Vibratory mechanisms. LANE, J. R. (International Research & Development Corporation). Feb. 26, 1958, No. 6265/58. Class 80 (4). In apparatus for producing unidirectional vibrations of variable magnitude by means of oppositely rotating out-of-balance masses, the masses rotate in parallel bores 12, 14 of a housing 10 and each mass comprises a pair of cylinders 16, 18 or 20, 22 which are rolled around inside the bores by pairs of slotted arms 36, 40 or 38, 42, the arms in a pair normally rotating together but being angularly adjustable relatively to each other to vary the degree of out-of-balance from zero to a maximum. The arms 36, 38 are keyed on respective shafts 32, 24 carrying intermeshing gears 30, 28, while the arms 40, 42 are keyed on respective sleeves 52, 44 which are coaxially mounted on the said shafts and carry intermeshing gears 50, 48. The intergeared shafts 24, 32 are directly driven from a motor 56 by a belt 58, the intergeared sleeves 44, 52 being driven from the shaft 24 through phasechanging gearing 64. The gearing 64, Fig. 6, comprises a gear 66 on the belt-driven shaft 24, a coaxial gear 80 on the sleeve 44, and an interconnecting train of gears 68, 72, 76 mounted between plates 60, 62, the gears 66, 80 thus rotating at the same speed and in the same direction. Adjustment of the phase between the gears 66, 80 is effected by rotating the plates 60, 62 about the axis of shaft 24 by means of a worm and segment drive 84. Such adjustment effects simultaneous angular adjustment between the two rotating arms in each bore 12, 14 and hence varies the magnitude of the unidirectional vibratory force.
