520,968. Dyes. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Nov. 4, 1938, No. 32070. Convention date, Nov. 6, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] Triarylmethane dyestuffs containing two vic. m-xylidine residues and in the p-position to the carbinol carbon a replaceable atom or group e.g., halogen, alkoxy, sulphonic or nitro are reacted with aminophenols or substitution products thereof, the components being such that the products contain at least two sulphonic groups or a sulphonic group and a carboxylic group. In a modification, at least two sulphonic groups are introduced into the dyestuffs by sulphonation. In examples: (1) a dyestuff derivable from vic.-m-xylidine and p-chlorbenzaldehyde is treated with p-phenetidine and sulphonated ; (2) a dyestuff derivable from vic.-m-xylidine and p-chlorbenzaldehyde-msulphonic acid is treated with 4-aminophenol- 2-sulphonic acid, 2-hydroxy-3-aminobenzoic acid, 3-sulpho-5-amino-2-hydroxybenzoic acid and with 5-amino-2-hydroxybenzoic acid.
