Abstract

519,246. Coking processes and apparatus. GAS ENGINEERS, INSTITUTION OF and DENT, F. J. Oct. 7, 1938, No. 29109. [Class 55 (i)] Coal and the like is carbonised in a current of hydrogen or gases containing hydrogen under pressure substantially above atmospheric, for example 25 atmospheres, the exothermic reaction between the hydrogen and the charge being initiated by local heating to form a zone of reaction and high temperature which travels through the charge. The local heating may be provided by combustion of a part of the coal, by electrical heating, or by temporarily heating the hydrogen to 600‹C. or higher. Once the reaction has started, no further heating is necessary. Coke of high reactivity and a gas of good calorific value is obtained. A cylindrical metal retort 1 may be used mounted on trunnions 4, the hydrogen being admitted through pipe 5, and the distillates withdrawn through an outlet 6, the charge being supported on a grate 7. Caking coals are treated in the retort shown in Fig. 2 in which water cooling pipes 11 are arranged at the top, finer parts of the screened coal being arranged around the inner wall of the retort and at 12 around the inlet pipe. The metallic lining 9 is cooled by water in helical grooves 10 between the lining and the retort wall. Impervious plastic zones are formed adjacent the wall and at the top of the charge, and prevent channelling of the gas along the wall.
