Abstract

515,541. Speedometers. HILL, H. W. June 3, 1938, No. 16650. [Class 106 (iii)] An instrument of the. type in which observations of a distant object are used to actuate a pointer so that it moves over a chart in a manner corresponding to the movements of the object, is modified for use as a speed indicator by connecting a carriage a to the pointer, the carriage running on a wheel b which drives an indicator through a friction gear c, means being provided for periodically breaking the drive between wheels b and c and restoring the indicator to zero when the drive is broken. In one construction the drive is broken by a clockworkdriven cam r which raises an arm d carrying the wheel c. The arm d can also be raised by a periodically energized electromagnet. The indicator is zeroized by a spring k connected to a chain coiled around the spindle of wheel c. The mechanism acts as a periodic counter speedometer which measures the speed of carriage a which is proportional to the speed of the distant object and the indicator may thus be calibrated to give the latter speed directly.
