Abstract

514,120. Rotary pumps; stuffing - boxes ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION. April 27, 1938, No. 12592. Convention date, April 29, 1937. [Classes 110 (ii) and 122 (v)] A rotary or other type of reversible air pump uses the pressure on the delivery side to prevent lubricating oil from creeping up the shaft 3 into the chamber 17 from the driving motor. Passages 21, 22 lead to pump inlet or discharge ports 13, 14. If 14 is acting as the discharge port, air under pressure' forces down ball valve 26 and places the chamber 17 under pressure, the valve, 25 being pressed on to its seat, thus preventing oil passing to the suction port 13. When the pump is reversed, valve 25 opens and valve 26 is closed. Lubricating oil under pressure enters, a port 38 and is fed from an annular chamber 40, through a passage 44 to a hole 51 in a ring 46, once per revolution of the latter. Lubricant is thus fed to the pump by way of a recess between the ring 46 and a sleeve 41. The oil flow may be controlled by varying the oil pressure, the size of .the passage 39 or recess 51, or by varying the springs 48.
