Abstract

513,909. Surfacing and planing floors &c. JACKSON, S. P., TOBIAS, B., and LANGTON, H. K: WARR-. March 21, 1938, No. 8636. [Classes 60 and 145 (i)] A machine for surfacing floors, decks, &c. comprises a body, a surfacing drum, which may be a sandpapering drum, a polishing drum or a cutter block, borne at one end of the body on a transverse axis, a castor at the other end of the body and a driving motor on the body, the drum being shaped or so mounted that its line of contact with the floor extends at least to the side of the machine, whereby it may work up close to a skirting board. In Fig. 1 the drum 1 is conical and carried by a shaft 2 in bearings 3, 4 in the body 7, being belt driven from a. motor 8; the pressure distribution may be varied along the drum by suitably locating the castors. In a modification, the drum is mounted rotatably on a shaft carried in cantilever fashion by the body, and in a further modification the shaft runs in a cantilever extension of the body. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the drum 23 is secured to a shaft 24. running in bearings 25, 26 in a hollow cantilever extension 27 of the body 30, one bearing, 25, being centrally placed in the length of the drum. The weight distribution on the drum may be adjusted by the setting of the castor 31, and two other wheels 32 may be used close to the drum with spring means for varying the pressure on the drum, which may be carried on a hinged part of the body 30. A suction dust collector 39 may be employed.
