Abstract

509,890. Ethers of mono-hydroxy-halogen 1; 4-benzoquinones. GROVES, W. W. (I.G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Jan. 20, 1938, No. 1910. [Class 2 (iii)] Ethers of monohydroxy-halogen-1 ; 4-benzoquinones are made by treating a 1 ; 4-benzoquinone containing more than one halogenatom with an alcohol in the presence of a quantity of an acid-binding agent not exceeding the equivalent of the amount of quinone used. A diluent which may be the same alcohol may be used. In examples. (1) Chloranil is heated with methanol and sodium acetate to yield 2-methoxy-3 ; 5 ; 6 ;-trichloro-1; 4-benzoquinone. (2) Bromanil heated with ethanol and potassium carbonate yields ethoxytribromo-1 ; 4-benzoquinone. (3) Trichloro-tolu-1 ; 4-quinone heated with methanol and sodium acetate to yield methoxy-dichloro-tolu-1 ; 4-quinone. (4) Chloranil heated with n-butanol and potassium acetate yields butoxy-trichloro-1 ; 4-benzoquinone. (5) 2:5 dichloro-6-methyl-1 ; 4-benzoquinone heated with methyl alcohol and sodium acetate yields a methoxy-chloro-tolu-quinone. The products may be used, if desired, without isolation from the reaction mixtures for the preparation of gyes or dye intermediates. (Cf. Specifications 509,891, 509,893, and 509,898.)
