Abstract
3-Methoxy- and 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde are manufactured by treating 3-methoxy or 3-ethoxy - 4 - hydroxyphenyltrichlormethyl carbinol respectively with an alkali alcoholate or an alcoholic solution of an alkali hydroxide or of an alkaline-earth hydroxide. Examples describe the treatment of the methoxy compound with sodium methylate, a solution of potassium hydroxide in ethanol or methanol or a solution of barium hydroxide in methanol, and of the ethoxy compound with a solution of sodium or potassium hydroxide or a mixture thereof in methanol. Specification 219,676, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.
