[Class 17 (ii)] Athletic footwear, especially for practising ski-ing, comprises a boot having an upper in two sections articulated together to permit free bending of the foot in the forward direction while affording lateral support to the ankle joint. As shown in Fig. 1, stirrups 3 are attached one on each side of the vamp or lower section 2 of the upper of a boot to serve as runners for slides 4 carried by two rigid plates 5 on the upper section of the boot upper. This upper section is in two parts 8, 9 joined at the back and sides by a flexible collar 10 and adapted to be fastened by laces &c. at the front. Straps 15 passing through loops 16 secure the boot, which has side slits 17 to facilitate entry of the foot, and support the foot in practising ski-ing. A garter of cloth 14 may enclose the leg portion of the upper. In a modification, Fig. 3, the two sections 18, 22 of the upper have on opposite sides, respectively, rounded recessed openings 20 and rounded projections 21 and are connected by straps 25. The gap between the sections 18, 22 may be internally or externally masked by a gaiter 26 of soft leather &c. with wrinkles to permit freedom of movement of the foot. The upper section 22 of the upper may be secured by a lace 23 and straps 29 passing through eyelets 30 set below the instep may secure the lower part of the upper and support the foot.
