Abstract
509,053. Winches. KEMPE, I. T. Jan. 25, 1938, No. 2379. [Class 78 (v)] A winch for temporarily laying cables from a travelling vehicle is furnished with positively driven draw-off gripping rollers b between which the cable d passes, the rollers b being driven by a flat belt c passing over a pulley e on a roller shaft and over the coiled cable on the storage drum a. The speed of the rollers b is thus proportionate to the pay-off speed of the cable. To tension the belt c, the roller assemblage may slide on guide bars k and be pressed by a spring l<1>, or be mounted on a spring-pressed pivoted arm or the drum may be carried on pivoted arms and by its weight tension the belt, or a jockey pulley may bear on the belt. The drum may be motor-driven to unwind the belt, or may be turned by a handle h through multiplying gearing and a free-wheel clutch. To re-wind the cable, a temporary handle may be attached to the other side of the drum, or the drum may be taken off its shaft and replaced reversed. To facilitate this latter operation the gear-box i together with the drum may be tilted up about a spindle i<1>. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the roller shaft is directly driven from a poweroperated pulley m and drives the drum a through the belt c. Specifications 469,620 and 487,513 are referred to.
