Abstract

1305899 Winches W R HAMILTON 4 March 1970 [11 March 1969] 12681/69 Heading B8B A cable handling apparatus which may be mounted on a motor vehicle bumper, comprises a conduit 24 for guiding a cable C between a winch 2, 3, 8 and a freely rotatable storage drum 1 which is rotated by cable arriving at, or leaving the drum, tangentially thereto under the control of the winch. The winch comprises a pair of parallel driven grooved drums 2, 3 over both of which the cable is looped prior to passing around a rotary driving member 8 on which the cable is gripped by spring biased elements 14, the latter being displaced by cams 22 to release their grip at points A and B where the cable joins and leaves the member 8. The latter is driven through appropriate gearing or through a slipping clutch to facilitate a similar peripheral speed to that of the drums 2 and 3, tension being maintained in the cable being hauled in by passing it through a friction block 27. The rotatable member 8 is formed by two disc parts, one of which contains the gripping elements 14 and is axially displaceable relative to the other part to permit ungripped movement of the cable over the member 8 during cable pay out. A dog clutch is provided to facilitate disengagement of the winch drive whereby the cable may be payed out manually.
