Abstract

508,457. Lifting motor vehicles. HANSEN, A. G. K. Nov. 2, 1938, No. 31701. [Class 78 (iii)] A motor vehicle is raised at one end for repair by a hydraulic ram 3, Fig. 5, applied direct to one axle, the other axle remaining on its road wheels on the ground. The cylinder 1 is sunk in the ground and connected to a source of compressed air by a pipe 5 fitted with supply and blow-off valves 6, 7 respectively. The piston is guided at the upper end of the cylinder by a sunk casting 4 which can be covered by a flat plate when the apparatus is not in use. The piston may be locked in the raised position by a headed pin 13, Fig. 2, a pivoted pawl 15 Fig. 3, or by a pair of friction grips acting on opposite sides of the rod with a toggle-action. In the case of the pin, the head 13 passes below the level of the adjacent surface of the member 4 when the shank 12 rests on it, thus preventing axial withdrawal until the rod has been raised to release the head.
