6 Claims.
This invention relates to a lifting jack and consists in the provision of an improved hydraulic 'jack adapted for lifting or raising automobiles, trucks and the like for changing or repairing tires. An object of the invention is to provide a jack of this character which will obviate the need of the operator of personally getting under the fender and bumper of -a vehicle to properly place the jack, an operation undesirable because of the dirt, grease and grime which gets on the hands and clothes incidental to such an operation.
Further the invention consists in the" provision of a jack which may be easily set for either right or left hand work, and which is also provided so as to aiford a rigid hold for the operator to steady the jack until it takes hold of the load.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will present themselves from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the jack.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of an end portion of the jack.
Figures 4, 5, and 6 are detail views illustrating certain structural features hereinafter more fully referred to.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that the jack comprises a center plate 5 to which are pivoted the offset ends 6a and Id of a pair of elongated base bars 6 and I. The ends 6a and la are joined together and pivoted to one another and to the plate 5 in a manner clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 and through the medium-of a pivot bolt 8.
The member 6 is in the form of a channel bar and is provided at its free end with a foot 9. Pivoted within the channel of the member 6 is a lifting cylinder in in which operates a plunger having a rod ll I A main lifting lever I2 is pivotally connected as at 13 with the outer end of the plunger rod I I. At one end, the lever l2 which is of the shape shown is pivoted between a pair of standards II as at 15. The standards I I are pivoted at 2 within the channel member 6 adjacent the pivoted end of the channel member.
The lifting head for the jack is indicated by the reference numeral 16. The head I6 is in the.
the lever l2 and through an opening l9 provided intermediate the ends of the member l6, and the bolt I8 is equipped with a nut 18w as shown. Thus I through the bolt and nut means I8, I80, the memis a pump including a suitable base 22 with which is formed integral a pump cylinder 23 in which operates a pump piston provided with a rod-24. An operating lever for the pump is indicated by the reference numeral 25 and is pivoted at one end to the rod 24 of the pump piston as at 26. The lever 25 is also connected with the base 22 of the pump through the medium of a link 21.
Provided on the free end of the member I is an inclined hollow member 28 which forms a hand grip for the jack and also an oil reservoir.
Obviously, any suitable provision may be made for filling the reservoir 28 and this reservoir is connected with the cylinder of the pump 23 by a pipe line 29. It will thus be seen that the-pump 23, is used for drawing oil from the reservoir 28 and forcing the oil into the raising cylinder l0 through a suitable pipe line 32 connecting the pump 22 with the cylinder ID. This pipe line includes a suitable swivel joint 32 as shown in Figure 1 and as detailed in Figure 4.
For holding the member 6 and l in alignment for use, or in folded parallel relation for storage purposes, there is pivotally and suitably mounted on one side of the member I a foot lever 35 formed at one end to provide a latch 36 cooperable with notches 31 provided in diagonal corners of the plate 5 as clearly suggested in Figures 2 and 3. In actual practice, the members 6 and I are locked in longitudinal alignment with the lever l2 and associated parts lowered sufliciently to permit the jack head |6a to engage under the part of the vehicle desired, as for example, the axle housing. The operator then operates the pump 23 by proper manipulation of the lever 25. Fluid as before mentioned, is drawn from thereservoir and forced into the cylinder In for raising the piston therein and thereby raises the lever I2 and associated parts for elevating the wheel of the v hicle or the part'desired. After use thereof, the oil in the lifting cylinder I II is permitted to return to the reservoir 28 thus lowering the lever l2 and associated parts. The latch member 36 is then disengaged from the near notch 8l-and the members 6 and I are then swung' into parallel relation when the latch member 38 is then engaged with theother notch 81 to thereby secure the jack in folded position for storage purposes.
In connection with the above, it will be noted that in lowering the jack oil returns to the reservoir through pipe line 32 and by-pass line 32a tapped into the line 82 as shown. In by-pas's line 82:: there is provided a suitable valve which of course is closed when pumping oil to the lifting cylinder, and is opened when the jack is to be lowered.
To return oil that may pass up and about the piston in cylinder III to the reservoir 28 a leak line 38 connects the upper end of the cylinder with the reservoir 28 as illustrated in Figure 1.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a jack, a base comprising a pair of pivotally connected members, a hydraulic lifting device on one of said members and including a lifting cylinder having a piston operating therein and provided with a rod, a standard pivoted at one end to said one base member, an angular lifting lever pivoted at one end to said standard and also pivoted intermediate its ends to the rod of said piston, a load engaging member carried by said lever, a reservoir mounted on the other of said base members, a pump mounted on the last named" base member, conduit means connecting said reservoir with the pump, other conduit means connecting the pump with the lifting cylinder, and including a valve equipped bypass connected with said reservoir, and a leak conduit connecting the upperportion of the lifting cylinder with the reservoir.
2. In a jack, a base comprising a pair of pivotally connected members, a hydraulic lifting device on one of said members and including a lifting cylinder having a piston operating therein and provided with a rod, astandard pivoted at one end to said base member, an angular lifting lever pivoted at one end to said standard and also pivoted intermediate its ends to the rod of said piston, a load engaging member carried by said lever, a reservoir mounted on the other of said base members, a pump mounted on the last named base member, conduit means connecting the pump with the lifting cylinder, and including a valve equipped by-pass connection with the reservoir, the conduit connection between the pump and the lifting cylinder including a swivel joint whereby to provide for an uninterrupted flow of fluid through said conduit regardless of the angular relation of the base members.
3. In a jack, a base comprising a pair of pivotally connected members, a hydraulic lifting device on one of said members and including a lifting cylinder having a piston operating therein and provided with a rod; a standard pivoted to said one member, an angular lifting lever pivoted at one end to said standard and also pivoted intermediate its ends to the rod of said piston, a loadengaging member carried by said lever, a reservoir mounted on the other of said base members, a pump mounted on the last named base member, a feed conduit means connecting said reservoir with the pump, other conduit means connecting the pump with the lifting cylinder, and including a valve-equipped by-pass connected with the reservoir, said reservoir being in the form of a hand grip to facilitate handling of the jack. v
4. In a jack, a base comprising a pair of pivotally connected members, a hydraulic lifting device on one of said members and including a lifting cylinder having a piston operating therein and provided with a rod, a standard pivoted to said one base member, an angular lifting lever pivoted at one end of said standard and also pivot-ed intermediate its ends to the rod of said piston, 12 load engaging member carried by said lever,'a reservoir mounted on the other of said base members, a pump mounted on the last named base member, a feed conduit connecting the pump with the lifting cylinder, a second conduit connecting the pump with the reservoir, the conduit connection between the pump and the lifting cylinder including a swivel joint whereby to provide an uninterrupted flow of fluid through said conduit regardless of the angular relation of the base member, a base plate to which the pivoted ends of the base members are also pivoted, a foot lever pivotally mounted on one of the base members, and interengaging latch means on said base plate and said foot lever for latching the base members at the desired position relative to one another.
5. In a jack, a base comprising a pair of pivotally connected members, a hydraulic lifting device on one of said members and including a lifting cylinder having a piston operating therein and provided with a rod, a standard pivoted to said member laterally of the cylinder, an angular lifting lever pivoted at one end to said standard and having a pivoted connection intermediate its ends with the rod of said piston, a load engaging member carried by said lever, a reservoir mounted on the other of said base members, a pump mounted on the last named base member, a conduit connecting said reservoir with the pump, a feed conduit connecting the pump with the lifting cylinder and including a valve equipped return by-pass connecting the lifting cylinder with the reservoir.
6. In a jack, a base comprising apair of pivotally connected members, a hydraulic lifting device on one of said members and including a lifting cylinder having a piston operating therein and provided with a rod, a standard pivoted to said one member laterally of the cylinder, an angular lifting lever pivoted at one end to said upright means and also pivoted intermediate its ends with the rod of said piston, a load engaging member carried by said lever, a reservoir mounted on the other of said base members, a pump mounted on the last named base member, a conduit connecting said reservoir with the pump, a second conduit connecting the pump with the lifting cylinder, and including a valve-equipped by-pass connecting the lifting cylinder with the reservoir, said load engaging member including a bar pivoted at one end to the lifting lever, and bolt means connecting a free end of the lever with an intermediate portion of the load engaging member for limiting angular movement of the load engaging member in one direction rela- I tive to the lifting lever.
