[Class 40 (v)] In a negative feedback amplifier the feedback path is constituted by a transmission line of predetermined characteristic impedance and having a length not exceeding the wavelength of the maximum frequency handled or by a short-length of coaxial cable transmission line. The Figure shows an amplifier with feedback from a resistance R1 in the cathode of the output stage to a resistance R2 in the cathode circuit of the input stage. In a modification a bridge arrangement of the feedback path is used for both the input and output. The length of the line may be comparable to the wavelength used or may be a small fraction of the wavelength corresponding to the highest frequency at which the product of the gain and the feedback exceeds unity and the terminating resistances of the line may differ from its characteristic impedance. By varying the length of the line between one half and a whole wavelength corresponding to the frequency at which instability is liable to occur the frequency discrimination of the amplifier may be controlled.
