Guns having a sliding. and exchangeable barrel a in which the barrel is provided with a longitudinal groove a' engaged by a pin e<2> on the gun casing during normal sliding of the barrel, have a further transverse groove g into which the pin e<2> can be adjusted, the groove g serving to guide the barrel during its rotation for unlocking and to preclude sliding movement of the barrel to open the breech unless the barrel is properly attached. In the form shown applied to a large-calibre machine gun, the pin e<2> is raised and turned through 90' from the position shown in Fig. I to the position shown in Fig. 3 when the barrel is to be detached by rotation to disengage the interrupted collars a from corresponding collars on the breech casing b. After being turned, the barrel may be withdrawn forwardly, the widened portion of the pin e<2> then moving in the axial extension g' of the groove g.
