505,300. Hinged valves. SERTILLANGE, M. A. Feb. 23, 1938, No. 5711. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1937. [Class 135] A flap or hinged valve C is given two successive movements by the rotation of a hand wheel L in one direction, the first of these movements being a pivotal movement about the axis d of the hand wheel and serving to bring the valve member C to its seat S and the second movemont being a rotary movement of the valve member about a pivot 0 on a pivoted support A and causing the valve to be tightly pressed to its seat by the interengagement of lugs e, e<1>, e<11> with ramps E, E<1>, E". As shown in Figs. 1, 2, the flap valve C is rotatably carried by the pivot 0 on an arm A resiliently coupled to the axis d of the hand wheel L by oppositely acting springs r, r<1>. A worm V<1> fixed on the shaft d engages a toothed part R on the valve and rotates the same so as to cause lugs e, e<1>, e<11 >to pass under fixed projections or ramps E, E<1>, E<11> when the valve is closed and so wedge the valve against its seat. In a modification, the valve is provided with a scaling face of rubber and is associated with an intermediate ring also loose on the pivot O. Teeth are formed on this ring. In another form, the pivotal supporting arm A and the worm V<1> are carried by separate coaxial'shafts each having a clutch member for selective engagement by the wheel L.
