Abstract

473,855. Two-stroke engines. NEIDL, G. Dec. 2, 1936, No. 33117. [Class 7 (ii)] In an internal-combustion engine of the opposed-piston type wherein the opposed pistons are connected to cranks set at an angle of less than 180‹, the ignition of combustible mixture between the pistons, or the injection of fuel into compressed air between them, is timed so that it occurs or begins at the moment when the distance of one of the crank-pins from a dead centre which it has just past is equal to the distance of the other crank-pin from the opposite dead centre, which it is approaching. The cylinder 1 has a bucket piston 2 connected by rods 3 to two cranks on a shaft 4. The piston 5 within the piston 2 is connected to the shaft by a rod 6. The cylinder has ports 9, 10, 11 and the piston 2 ports 12, 13. The port 10 opens into a chamber 14 containing a spark plug 15 to ignite a compressed charge in the space 16. The spark plug may be omitted and the engine operated on the Diesel cycle. The port 9 opens into a chamber 17 connected by a pipe 18 to the crank case and the port 13 opens directly to the crank case. The port 11 opens into an exhaust chamber 20. Chambers 22 are provided with cooling water. Fuel and air are admitted to the crank case and pass when the pistons have moved apart, through port 13, and through pipe 18, chamber 17 and port 9 into the space between the pistons. When the pistons are in the position shown in Fig. 4 with the ports 10, 12 in register, injection of fuel takes place if the engine is a Diesel engine, or ignition by a spark, &c., if the engine is of the gas or petrol type. When the ports 9, 11 register with the ports 12, 13, exhaust takes place through ports 11, 13 with scavenging due to air entering through the port 12. The cranks may be replaced by eccentrics or equivalent mechanism. The pistons may be disced to bring them closer together. In a modification, Fig. 2, the upper piston 25 is connected to the shaft by return connecting rods 27 and carries the piston of a scavenging pump. When working as a Diesel engine, fuel is injected at 33 and air at ports 34, 35 through which the exhaust also passes.
