Abstract

503,851. Coating with metals. WRILEY, C. Oct. 14, 1937, No. 27991. [Class 82 (ii)] An embossing foil comprising a layer of metal on a support such as paper or the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane," with an intermediate layer of a substance such as wax which permits the detachment of the metal layer when the foil is heated, is made by enclosing the support, coated with the intermediate layer of wax &c. and a supply of metal in a vacuum chamber and heating the metal above its vaporization point so as to deposit a film of metal on the support. The support is preferably in the form of a roll which is unwound from one bobbin on to another during the process. The metal layer may comprise a single layer, e.g. of gold, platinum, palladium, or their alloys, cobalt, chromium, aluminium or aluminium bronzes, or a very thin layer of a precious metal may be deposited and the required thickness obtained by depositing thereon one or more layers of base metal, e.g. nickel, cobalt, chromium, or copper. For example, a layer of copper or nickel may be deposited on the precious metal and a layer of aluminium then deposited on the copper or nickel. The metal may be deposited from a mixture of the metal with a metal of a higher vaporization point. The metal layer is finally coated with size or the like.
