Abstract

<PICT:1115911/C6-C7/1> Ceramic, glass, metal or plastics material is coated by vapour deposition with a first layer of Cr or Ni-Cr, a second layer of a mixture of Cr or Ni-Cr with one or more metals e.g. Cu, Au, Ag, Ni or Sn and a third layer of one or more metals e.g. Cu, Au, Ag, Ni or Sn. Coating is carried out in a vacuum vessel 1 containing electrically heated vapour sources 5, 6 and a shaft 2 carrying substrates 4 which are rotated during coating. The coatings are produced by selectively starting and stopping evaporation from each source; automatic timing control may be used.
