Abstract
503,310. Centrifugal pumps. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Dec. 7, 1938, No. 35674. Convention date, May 7. [Class 110 (i)] In a pump unit comprising a main centrifugal pump 2 and auxiliary priming pump 3 with a passage from the outlet 8 of pump 3 to the inlet 5 of pump 2, a non-return -valve 16 is placed between the inlet 5 and the passage which has an air outlet 13 closed by a valve 14. The passage may comprise pipes 9, 15 and reservoir 10 always containing sufficient liquid passing through pipe 17 and valve 18 to prime pump 3 which draws air from inlet 5 by pipe 6 and inlet 7. Valve 14 is preferably either a float or connected to a float so that the air outlet is closed when the.liquid in reservoir 10 and valve chamber 12 reaches a predetermined level. On starting, pump 3 draws air and then liquid from inlet 5 until reservoir 10 is filled sufficiently to cause valve 14 to close outlet 13, when the pressure developed in pipe 15 opens valve 16. On stopping, the draining of inlet 5 draws liquid through pump 3 from the upper part of reservoir 10 so that outlet 13 opens and valve 16 closes, the air from outlet 13 passing through pump 3 to outlet 5 to completely empty it. The reservoir 10 may be dispensed with and pipe 9 connected to chamber 12.
