503,001. Back - pedalling brakes for cycles. KEHOE, J. July 21, 1938, No. 21616. [Class 136 (i)] Back-pedalling mechanism for operating a rear-wheel brake comprises a trigger or catch mounted on the chain wheel and adapted to be brought into and out of action by means of a cam rigid with the chain wheel, the cam action being effected by a limited relative movement between an inner driving member and an outer 'driven member forming the chain wheel. A disc 2 rigid with the crank shaft 1 is formed with outward projections 3 which on forward driving move through gaps 31 into driving engagement with inward projections 5 on the chain wheel 4, springs 29 urging them in the reverse direction. Two spring-controlled triggers 6 are each pivoted at 7 to side plates 8, Figs. 1 and 2, bolted to the disc 2, and are provided with a lug 11 engaging an outwardly curved cam 10 fixed at 35 to the chain wheel 4, whereby, on relative movement between the disc 2 and the chain wheel 4, the trigger 6 is swung laterally so that when in the lower position it moves into and out of engagement with a rib 12 on a floating brake-operating member 13 suspended by links 16, 17 from the cycle frame. The link 16 is pivoted at 23 to a spring-controlled pull-rod 21 operating the brake 24-through a. U-shaped bracket 25.
