Abstract

502,760. Screw propellers. ENGLESSON, J. E. Jan. 28. 1938, No. 2754. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 2, 1938.] [Class 114) In variable-pitch screw propellers in which adjustment is effected by hydraulic motor under the restraint of a spring, the latter is arranged in a chamber containing oil at a pressure higher that that of the surrounding fluid. The propeller 2 has blades 10 with an eccentric pin 14 engaging a guide 13 on a slidable member attached to a piston 6. This slidable member has a control rod 16 which has passages coacting with ports in the slide for supplying pressure to either side of the piston. On the forward side are placed two springs 19, 20 of which the outer spring 20 has an outer diameter such that is in close contact with the wall of the chamber 8. Should the supply of pressure oil fail the piston 6 is forced to the end of the cylinder and the port 40 is closed to retain such oil as surrounds the springs. In this limit position of the piston the nut 22 on the slide rod abuts against a collar 23 on a flange . 21 which forms the front abutment also for the springs. With this arrangement it is possible to unload the springs prior to detaching the cap 8 for dismantling.
