[Class 97 (iii)] An air-filled cylinder 9 sealed at its lower end communicates at its upper end with a belt 10. The cylinder 9 and bell 10 are arranged in a glass tube 1 containing liquid and open at its upper end. An outer cylinder 7 having a slot 8 is interposed between the bell 10 and tube 1 so as to form a pair of capillary spaces. As shown, the cylinder 9 and bell 10 are suspended from a pulley 15 on a spindle 16 carrying a larger pulley 18 which is connected by a cord 24 to a pointer moving over a scale (not shown). The position of the tube 1 may be adjusted by the screw 21. A pointer 29 on an endless band 32 may be adjusted to the levels of the liquid by a handwheel 34. Variations in the volume of the air in the cylinder 9, due in particular to variations in temperature, cause variations in the levels of the liquid and enable the weather to be forecast from the relative movements of the liquid in the capillary space between the tube 1 and cylinder 10 and in the slot 8. In a modification the cylinders 7, 9, and the bell 10 form a unit with a cap against which the tube 1 may be pressed by an outer casing.
