Abstract

499,219. Automatic control systems. STERN, W. July 24, 1937, No. 20490. [Class 38 (iv)] Fluid pressure; fluid flow.-A float 1 formed wholly or partially of ferromagnetic material is arranged to float on the surface of a liquid in a tube 2, a coil 8 arranged to surround the tube 2 having a condenser 10 arranged in series or parallel therewith so that at a predetermined position of the liquid level in 2 carrying the core 1 resonance takes place and the variation of the current produced thereby causes relay coil 15 to effect operation of means for controlling the liquid level. The means may comprise a contact member 18 released by the coil 15 when resonance occurs to open the circuit of a motor 6 driving a pump supplying pressure oil to the container 5 of a hydraulic press to which the tube 2 is connected. The indicating instrument 14 gives an indication of the liquid level and may be arranged to make and break the circuits of signalling devices or may be used instead of the relay coil 15. The part of the tube 2 adjacent to the coil 8 is made of non- magnetic material. One or more additional coils 8<1> may be arranged on the tube 2 and may be associated with the instrument 14 and with the relay 15 or may be connected with different instruments and with further relays for controlling the liquid level regulating means. The Specification describes arrangements in which the liquid level is respectively arranged to be dependent on the pressure in a cylinder, the pressure relationship between two containers, and the rate of flow of a fluid in a pipe line which are controlled by the means energized on the occurrence of resonance produced when the ferromagnetic float passes into the coil or one of the coils surrounding the tube in which it floats.
