497,884. Hydraulic power transmission. AKTIEBOLAGET LJUNGSTROMS ANGTURBIN. Dec. 13, 1937, No. 34512. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1936. [Class 69 (ii)] A hydraulic power transmission, particularly for railway vehicles, comprises two hydraulic couplings 6, 7 and a hydraulic torque converter 19 ; the impellers 11, 12 of the couplings are connected to each other and to the driving shaft 1 ; the turbine 13 of the coupling 6 is connected to the driven shaft 2, while the turbine 15 of the coupling 7 is connected by sleeve 17 to the impeller 20 of the torque converter 19, the turbine rotor 28 of which is connected to the driven shaft 2 through a oneway clutch 29. The couplings are employed selectively. When coupling (i is filled, drive from shaft 1 to shaft 2 is through this coupling only ; when coupling 7 is filled, drive is through the coupling 7 and torque converter 19, which is permanently fitted. The clutch 29 may be omitted, the turbine rotor 28 being then connected directly to the driven shaft 2 and the turbine blades being arranged to be withdrawn from the circuit to obviate eddv losses in the converter.
