Abstract

495,424. Bowden and like mechanism. ARENS CONTROLS, Ltd., and HARRING- TON, J. W. May 22, 1937, No. 14316. [Class 136 (i)] A device for the transmission of both push and pull movements, of the type employing a compound cable, comprises a hollow casing, a toothed pinion rotatably mounted in the casing, a toothed rack of rectangular cross-section slidably mounted in a correspondingly-shaped guideway in the casing to mesh with the pinion, and a flexible compound cable attached directly or indirectly to the rack. A flat casing 6 is provided with a central spigot on which is rotatably mounted a toothed pinion 8 secured to or formed on a disc 9, which fits within the open mouth of the casing and is provided with a radially-projecting operating-lever, the parts being held in position by an apertured plate 10 screwed &c. to the casing. A rectangular rack 13 meshing with the pinion 8 slides in a corresponding guideway 12, which is open at both ends, so that the cable may be passed in from either direction, to permit the device to be used as either a right- or left-hand fitting. The rack 13 is tapped to receive the threaded end of a tube 17, to which the inner tension-transmitting part 14 of the cable is secured at 18, the outer compression-transmitting part 15 abutting against the other end of the tube 17, the two parts of the cable being enclosed in a guide conduit 16. A stop 20 limits the movement of the operating-lever in either direction. The rack-and-pinion mechanism may also be interposed between the compound cable and the device to be operated. More than one rack may be in operative engagement with the pinion, or with two or more pinions of different diameters turning together, the racks being arranged in parallel or other relationship.
