[Class 20 (iii).] A sliding shutter or window 13, Fig. 1, is operated by a rotatable handle 1, the movements of which are transmitted to the window by a slidable member 5, a flexible cable 7, and a rod 9, the latter being mounted in a guide 10 and connected to the window or shutter at its upper end 11. In the form shown, a toothed wheel 3, mounted on the shaft 2 of the operating handle, engages with the teeth formed on two such slidable members 4, 5, which are connected to rods 9 mounted one at each side of the window 13. The flexible cables 7 each comprise a wire 14 surrounding a coiled spring 15 the whole being slidably arranged in the guide 10. Springs 29, arranged behind the members 4, 5, assist in raising the window. A spring-clutch device may be arranged between the handle 1 and wheel 3 and adapted to prevent rotation of the spindle 2 except when pressure is applied to the handle. In a modification, the flexible cables are connected to screw-threaded shafts 20, 21, Fig. 4, passing through screw-threaded bosses in two worm wheels 18, 19. The latter mesh with each other and are rotated to effect the displacement of the cables by a worm wheel 17 mounted on the shaft of the operating handle 1.
