[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XVIII] In a machine for grading fruit or other articles according to weight, the articles are fed singly to a scale pan 52, Fig. 6, by an endless-belt conveyer 70, an inclined shoot 71 and an endless belt 67. The endless belt 67 is provided with a series of depressions each large enough to retain a single article and is curved transversely so that other articles roll off and are returned by belts 72 to the point from which they are fed to the conveyer 70. In a modified feeding mechanism, Fig. 10, the articles are fed to cups 75 on an endless belt 73 and the weight of the articles causes the belt to advance and discharge the articles successively into the pan 48 under the control of an escapement 77 cooperating with stop pins 76 which are liberated from the escapement by the rise of the scale lever 51.
