Abstract
493,474. Ball bearings. LUHR, F. A. Jan. 2, 1937, No. 21547. Divided out of 493,435, [Group XXVIII]. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXIII] A rotary-tool holder, particularly for abrading discs, comprises a tool holder 2 carried by a stub shaft 3 supported in a spherical ball bearing 4 universally mounted by a spherical surface 5, in a housing 7 of a handle portion 1, and which is yieldably urged against a threaded ring 8 by helical springs 6. A flexible shaft 9, or a series of Cardan joints, connects the shaft 3 with a short shaft 10 which runs in a spherical bearing 11. This bearing is also mounted universally, by the spherical surface 12, in a rear housing 13 of the handle which is closed by a threaded portion 14. The rear end 15 of shaft 10 is connected with a flexible driving shaft 16. When resistance is encountered by the tool the stub shaft 3 tilts and this movement is transmitted by the shaft 9 to the bearing 12 to cause it to move axially along the housing 13. When lateral pressure is removed, the stub shaft 3 is centred by the springs 6. At the end rings 8, 14, or in the bearings themselves, packing may be arranged to prevent dripping of lubricant.
