Abstract

418,087. Universal joints. WILLIAMS, V. P., 224, Park Avenue, Baltimore, U.S.A. Oct. 27, 1933, No. 29882. [Class 80 (ii).] A universal joint of the ball and socket type comprises a hollow ball 1, having housings 7 for a pin 8 fitted at its ends with rollers 11 mounted upon needle bearings 12. The ball 1 is encased by a split housing 14, 15 provided with recesses 20 forming housings for the rollers 11. The ball forms a reservoir for lubricant and has flats 5 formed on its exterior connected by ports 5a with the interior. Groves 2 are also formed on the periphery and co-operate with similar grooves arranged at right angles in the housings 14, 15 to lubricate the rubbing surfaces. Flexing of the joint causes the lubricant to be drawn into one side and expelled from the other side of the roller 11 through the ports 22. The housing part 14 is provided with a packing device comprising a hard metal annulus 27 provided with a sharpened edge 28 engaging the ball 1 and a composition packing member 29 also engaging the ball 1 and held in place by a spring washer 30 of arched cross section and provided with spring tongues 32 which is positioned by a plate 22<g>.
